About the event

Fear iontach suimiúil ón cheantar seo b’é Pádraig Uí Loingsigh (1756-1838). Bhí traidisiún ag a mhuintir scoil scairte a eagrú i Loch an Oiléain, Co an Dúin. I 1794 Bhí Pádraig in a mhúinteoir Gaeilge ag Acadamh Bhéal Feirste. Bhí roinnt mac-léinn príobháideach aige chomh maith, Tomás Rúiséil ina measc. Bhí Ó Loingsigh fostaithe ag Edward Bunting agus tuilleadh nach é chun cuidiú leis an ábhar a aistriú dá bhailiúchain iomráiteach. Díol suntais go raibh ar Phádraig chomh maith le daoine eile, fianaise a thabhairt ag cás cúirte an Rúiséiligh i 1803.

Tá an staidéar is cumasaí ar Ó Loingsigh faoi láthair scríofa ag  Briain Mac Giolla Fhinnéin, Gael agus iomanaí aitheanta as Liatroim, Conate an Dúin ó dhúchas.

Cuirfidh Briain a chuid taighde faoin Loingseach in ár láthair agus pléfidh sé é ansin le Gaeilgeoir áitiúil, Jean Uí Néill  à la In-Our-Times-le-Mervin-Bragg. Beidh deis ag na rannpháirithe ceisteanna a chur ar Bhriain chomh maith.

Imeacht trí mheán na Gaeilge atá ann agus beidh fáilte mar is gnáthroimh fhoghlaimeoirí.

Patrick Lynch (1756-1838) was an incredibly interesting local man whose family ran a hedge school in Loughinisland. By 1794 Patrick was teaching Irish at the Belfast Academy. He also had many private students including Thomas Russell. Edward Bunting employed Lynch to help him translate the songs for his famous collection. However, Patrick, amongst others was forced to give evidence at the trial of Thomas Russell in 1803.

Briain Mac Giolla Fhinnéin, an Irish language speaker and well-known hurler from Liatrom, Co Down originally, has written the most comprehensive study on Lynch to date.

Brian, will introduce his research on Lynch and then discuss it with local Gaeilgeoir, Jean O’Neill, à la In-Our-Times-Mervin-Bragg-style. There will be an opportunity for the participants to ask Brian questions. This talk will be in Irish, but learners are most welcome.
